DESCRIPTION This study-unit discusses the basic principles and types of construction techniques used when producing textile items, and evaluates the appropriateness of purpose. Students will be given the opportunity to handle and use different sewing tools and equipment and to develop simple practical skills through the production of various textile samples.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at explaining the basic principles involved when producing textiles items and offering opportunities for practising basic construction techniques.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe through investigation the various equipment required for basic sewing skills;
- Recognise through group work analysis different construction techniques used in textiles and clothing;
- Identify different basic processes involved in the construction of textile items;
- Outline through observation and research the risks and hazards in the textile and fashion environment related to construction quality.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Practice the application of basic construction techniques and processes used in garment construction;
- Create various textile samples by means of the most recent time-saving tools and techniques;
- Produce a portfolio with various samples created during the practical sessions.
