DESCRIPTION | This study-unit begins by discussing the factors that need to be considered when selecting a home and explores the various types of accommodation to suit different family life-stages and changing needs. Students will be able to wisely search for a property, interpret architectural plans and discuss aesthetics, traditional features and the architectural character of Maltese homes. The various ways of acquiring a house and the processes involved will be discussed. The planning, construction and finishing of houses will be outlined, with emphasis on energy-saving features, security and low maintenance. This study-unit will also expose students to knowledge and design skills so as to provoke creativity when planning the home to suit different needs. They will analyse the possibilities, think of the details, and assess and access the technologies available which make the home a safe, practical and comfortable place to live in. They will also explore the various home related government schemes available to financially assist home owners in acquiring and renovating their home. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are to help students analyse the needs of modern families in modern homes. They will be prompted to consider different types of housing possibilities in Malta and ways of acquiring home ownership, or rental housing whilst looking at cost, location, construction, and value to individual family members. Finally, it will expose students to principles of organization of space for individual and family living during the family life cycle. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse through case studies the factors involved when making sensible choices for houses; - Discuss after online research the various types of accommodation available to suit different family needs; - Discuss the various ways of acquiring a house and outline the processes involved in each - Interpret architectural plans to be able to discuss needs and solutions with architects; - Identify appropriate local materials which can enhance interiors. - Identify home-related government schemes which could be availed of in different situations to assist home owners 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Search for a property using various means available; - Plan the structure and interiors of houses with suitable and flexible living spaces for all the family; - Plan spaces and rooms with an emphasis on energy-saving and other environmentally-friendly features.
