DESCRIPTION This study-unit exposes the students to the social, psychological, economic and aesthetic factors that influence the choice of clothing for different needs and activities. The unit focuses on the design of clothing for different stages of the life cycle and for special purposes such as recreational, different occupations etc., as well as for people with special needs. An outline will be given on the elements and principles of design used in the creation of well designed and aesthetically pleasing garments and accessories. Changes in fashion will also be discussed in terms of changing life-styles and various sources of inspiration for fashion styles will be highlighted. Students will be involved in designing and drawing a mini-collection, defining what are their inspirations.

Study-Unit Aims:

This unit aims at familiarising the students with the different fabrics available and their properties, introducing the students to various factors involved when coming to choose clothing for specific purposes and to prompt the students of what to wear, when and how.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- define the different types of fabrics available on the market, analysing their properties and determine their use in clothing fit for the intended purpose;
- discuss basic rights and obligations regarding the purchase of clothing and accessories;
- determine how to be an informed consumer when it comes to labelling and legislation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- present specific arguments as how to choose clothing for different occasions and specific purposes;
- apply and design through mini case studies a mini collections of clothing for various age groups and occasions defining their inspirations;
- argue the importance of being an informed consumer and discuss labeling legislation used on clothing for specific purposes.
