Study-Unit Description

CODE HPN2013

TITLE Pattern Drafting Using Traditional and Digital Forms

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Health, Physical Education and Consumer Studies

DESCRIPTION This study unit will develop understanding, vocabulary and skills in relation to pattern drafting. Through practical application the concept of traditional drafting techniques, such as the flat pattern method will be introduced. Students will practise procedures involved in taking measurements and drafting basic block patterns altered to fit various figures. The general approach to the digital part of this study unit will be to develop understanding in computer-aided design (CAD) features and functions to create a set of "standard" digital patterns. Studies will include development of a basic flat pattern, to a "standard size" or previously developed measurements, analysing the pattern accuracy: explaining the construction points and positioning, then creating new pattern versions with different components.

Study-Unit Aims:

The overall aim of this study unit will be to develop understanding, vocabulary and skills in relation to pattern drafting. It will introduce the concept of flat pattern drafting through practical sessions, showing how to measure for patterns, how to make alterations and how to draft different fashion components such as skirts, blouses, one piece sleeve and waistcoats. The second part to this study unit aims to provide an overview of how CAD can be applied using the knowledge of traditional pattern drafting. Practicals will explore CAD features and functions to provide the necessary skills for digital pattern drafting. Emphasis will be placed on the principle processes of CAD application, whilst familiarising tools to achieve proficiency in the software. Focus will also be placed on the management of digital records whilst exploring and editing CAD entities.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Outline after a demonstration the procedure involved in taking measurements;
- Identify through review of examples the principles of pattern alterations;
- Examine the possibilities of CAD features and functions and show understanding through a record of work that identifies techniques and processes used throughout CAD studies.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Draft patterns of various garments, such as skirts, blouses, one piece sleeve and waistcoats;
- Demonstrate understanding of CAD pattern drafting through the application of CAD techniques to complete an accurate flat pattern.
