DESCRIPTION The study-unit will be divided into various modules. It will start by covering elements and principles of design and the interior design process. This will include space planning, colour theory, lighting design, soft furnishings and basic draughting techniques. It will also look at the history of design: showing the styles and influences of history on design through the ages, as well as modern furniture design and the mix of styles. Appreciation of antiques and selection and placing of accessories and artwork will also be tackled.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to stimulate design creativity and develop a thorough understanding of the basics of interior design. Students will be introduced to elements and principles of design and the interior design process. This will include space planning, colour theory, lighting design, soft furnishings and basic draughting techniques. Students will also explore the history of design: identifying the styles and influences of history on design through the ages, as well as modern furniture design and the mix of styles. They will also be introduced to antiques appreciation as well as given basic guidance on the selection and placing of accessories and artwork for embellishment of spaces and surfaces.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Outline the basic elements of design which are involved in design of interiors;
- Describe the basic principles required for good design of space usage, surface coverings, lighting and embellishment;
- Demonstrate visual sensibilities in the use of proportion, form, colour, texture and lighting that will enable the manipulation of these elements knowingly and creatively.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Compare and contrast surface coverings, lighting features and furniture available on the market to suit different living settings;
- Draught simple plans to show furniture layouts, lighting and services plans to meet the needs of different living settings;
- Choose and design appropriate soft furnishings for different living settings.
