DESCRIPTION | This unit will provide the necessary skills to build a personal portfolio. Through exploration of different visual styles for different purposes, an understanding of how and why portfolios are used in different design sectors will be developed. Personal skills, strengths and interests will then be analysed, to enable research of appropriate careers paths. From this a plan with SMART objectives will be drawn up to facilitate good decisions and high standards in the portfolio. Furthermore, a selection process will take place, to enable effective evaluation of work as a whole, considering strengths and areas for improvement. A final selection of appropriate work will be put together in an organised and structured manner to include a cover page, content page, a combination of paper-based and digital work that displays various skills and a designer’s statement to highlight abilities for a particular purpose. Finally, the portfolio will be presented and analysed through the fitness for purpose concept to ensure that the selected work is displayed to the individual’s fullest potential and that it is relevant for intentions. Study-Unit Aims: This unit will introduce different visualisation techniques used to present a body of work, with the overall aim to develop a professional portfolio. Initial sessions will introduce different portfolio styles for different purposes and possible sources of inspiration that can inform ideas for personal styles in presentation methods. Through discussions, personal skills, strengths and interests will be analysed to enable an appropriate approach for the portfolio style, structure and overall presentation. From this, a plan with objectives will be drawn up and a selection of work will take place to facilitate good decisions and set standards for the portfolio. Practical exercises will explore and combine, a variety of materials, media, and techniques to develop personal presentation techniques for portfolio work. Work from other study-units and/or newly created work will be developed to create exciting new visualisations for a portfolio presentation. The completed portfolio will eventually be presented through a formal interview and discussed for assessment. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Conduct research on different visualisation styles and techniques, then present findings in a professional format; - Discuss ideas for the compilation and production of a professional personal portfolio. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate skills in media, materials and techniques to create professional presentations of work when compiling a portfolio; - Justify the final personal professional portfolio through a formal interview.
