DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will extend what was covered in Design of Interiors (1) to include design elements within building construction, coverings of surfaces, furniture and fittings and outdoor landscaping. It will also focus further on ergonomics and advanced draughting techniques, to cover elevation drawings, basic sketching, blending and mixing colours, and perspective drawings. In the final part of this study-unit the procedure in basics of interior design contract will be tackled. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of the study-unit is to provide further knowledge on the interior design principles and practical skills required to apply in future design projects. Students will explore design elements within building construction, coverings of surfaces, furniture and fittings and outdoor landscaping. They will identify the value of ergonomic design and observe and practise elements of advanced draughting techniques, to cover elevation drawings, basic sketching, blending and mixing colours, and perspective drawings. Students will also be guided through the the procedure involved in drawing up a basic interior design contract. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and describe the skills and trades involved in building and finishing interiors; - Outline the factors governing the selection of materials, finishes, manufacturing and installation techniques for building features as surfaces as applicable in different scenarios; - Describe basic furniture design principles focusing on aesthetics and function. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Draw and express visual ideas accurately and competently; - Apply and practise basic skills in undertaking an interior design project from the initial to final stages; - Apply principles of furniture design in their selection of materials, finishes, manufacturing and installation techniques; - Apply the acquired knowledge and techniques in their own residences, or future employment whether in hospitality or commercial sectors.
