DESCRIPTION In this study-unit students shall be required to conduct a research study about a topic related to Home Economics and produce a long essay of approximately 8,000 word. They will be guided by a Supervisor, together with an Advisor if needed. This study-unit enables students to practise research skills and develop their ability to conduct a study about a topic related to the degree and concisely report the results.

Whilst students are expected to work independently, supervision is provided from the proposal stage through to final submission to encourage an effective and ethically conducted and reported study.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to enable students to develop their ability to plan, conduct and write the final report for an independent research study about a topic related to Home Economics. Students are given the opportunity to explore a specific area of interest and further develop their research skills during the various phases of the research project.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a particular area of study related to Home Economics;
- Revise various research methods and tools and their suitability for different research studies;
- Justify their choice of research methodology and tools to answer the research question/s;
- Address any ethical issues arising from their research;
- Present findings, draw appropriate conclusions and outline recommendations based on their findings;
- Discuss research findings in the light of the related literature review.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate their ability to engage in academic writing;
- Write research question/s based on their planned study;
- Write a focused critical literature review related to the specific area chosen;
- Use appropriate qualitative and/or quantitative research methods and tools to collect data and/or answer research question/s;
- Produce an appropriately sectioned, referenced and formatted research report.
- Use tables, graphs and other graphics represent data efficiently and effectively
