DESCRIPTION This study-unit will focus on pedagogies for effective teaching and learning of specific topics in Home Economics including: health, food and nutrition, personal finance, consumer issues, safety, childcare and elderly care. Current trends are discussed and experienced. The main aspects of the HE syllabi will be analysed with the intention of exploring where and how these topics feature, what needs be emphasised and the appropriate pedagogies to use.

Emphasis will be placed on active learning to guide students on how to foster critical skills, decision-making, problem-solving also via presentations, case studies and role play. Students will also be given an insight on how to organise related displays, demonstrations, experiments, investigative work, tasting panels and educational visits. Assessment strategies suited to different topics will also be discussed.

This study-unit will introduce key knowledge and competencies which are required by Home Economics educators in line with health and safety standards in the classroom. Students will also be guided on specific safety procedures to consider in a Home Economics laboratory/practical room environment. They will be assigned work related to the organisation and monitoring processes for safe Home Economics learning activities.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to familiarise students with different aspects of specific topics in Home Economics and how these can be taught at different levels using a variety of pedagogies. Students will explore, experience and practise different active learning techniques suited to topics in the areas of health, food, nutrition, personal finance, consumer issues, safety, and child and elderly care amongst others. Students will also have the opportunity to produce appropriate resources and discuss different assessment options in relation to these topics.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe and analyse the HE programme of studies of the Education Division and MATSEC in relation to specific topics;
- Revise the theoretical concepts related to learning theory, constructivist and innovative pedagogies, differentiated approaches and ways for effective teaching;
- Identify ideas and approaches to teach specific topics in mainstream HE classes;
- Plan and develop strategies and learning experiences around specific topics for a differentiated class having children with special needs, different gender or abilities;
- Assess different teaching strategies and various teaching and learning resources suitable for different ability-students and learning experiences in specific HE topics.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Write appropriate behavioural objectives for a variety of learning activities on specific topics;
- Critically assess and modify published or web-based activities on specific topics for Secondary school students;
- Plan appropriate educational activities for a selection of topics and to suit different learning needs, abilities, genders, cultural backgrounds;
- Discuss strategies for parental and family involvement in learning activities targeting adolescents;
- Produce effective, practical, creative, age-appropriate, culturally-sensitive resources on different HE topics for Secondary school pupils.
