Study-Unit Description

CODE HPP5001

TITLE Pedagogy and Assessment of Physical Education

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Health, Physical Education and Consumer Studies

DESCRIPTION The study-unit focuses on pedagogical knowledge of practical components of both examined and core Physical Education. Various sports are used as a vehicle to teach transferable skills. Through this study unit, students learn how to facilitate the development of coordination, space awareness, analysis and synthesis of movement, problem solving, as well as the development of the fundamental skills of movement.

Various methods of teaching will be demonstrated and investigated, discussed and analysed. In this way students will be introduced to different ways of teaching various areas, where the focus is not sport-specific skill, but rather transferable skills that are fundamental for lifelong physical activity. During lectures, students will learn how to develop activities with this specific focus, and such activities will be used in micro-teaching sessions. Assessment practices of practical and theoretical concepts are also delved into. Paper setting for theoretical components will also feature in this study-unit, and students will work together in developing assessment tools.

Content tackled in this study-unit will include:

- Different Teaching Styles;
- Transferable skills;
- Fundamentals of movement;
- Lesson preparation;
- Assessment practices;
- Paper setting;
- Management & Organisation;
- Class Control & Student Behaviour;
- Catering for Different Abilities.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim is to help students develop the ability to analyse and choose the best pedagogical practices based on the aims and objectives related to the students' holistic development, with a particular focus on the physical domain. The aim is therefore to have students who are knowledgeable about various aspects that impinge on teaching, as well as the competencies necessary for effective assessment practices of practical components and diligent paper setting for the assessment of theoretical components.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate the ability to combine pedagogical and content knowledge through lesson preparation and micro-teaching;
- Demonstrate the ability to set examination papers through the production of SEC PE and Intermediate PE papers.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Produce pedagogical activities, with the intention of facilitating student learning of various skills, which are then utilised in micro-teaching sessions;
- Develop resources to enhance and assess student learning;
- Develop examination questions to assess student learning through paper setting;
- Develop worksheets and class-based tests for students;
- Within the context of a formal exam paper, students should be able to construct the framework and questions using a specification grid;
- As compliment to the exam paper, students are expected to produce appropriate marking schemes based on models which ensure standardisation of marking.
