DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will provide students the opportunity to learn about the nature of conflict and analyse different causes of conflict that may arise in the work of cultural mediation. Conflict theories will be explored, as well as conflict resolution strategies, including the role of empathy, active listening, and advocacy. Students will explore contextualised examples involving difficulties that people coming from other countries may find when they arrive and live in Malta. These examples will relate to different sectors where cultural mediators will be working, including the education, employment, health and social services sectors. Students will be trained in appreciating their own personal characteristics and backgrounds, on how to use them to their advantage, and how to recognise that these may at times become barriers to cultural mediation. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to help students acquire conflict resolution knowledge and skills, in order to support them in becoming more competent in resolving cross cultural conflicts in the various services where they will be working. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define the nature and role of conflict in given scenarios; - Describe conflict resolution techniques and apply them to conflict situations; - Identify personal resources and limitations and describe their role in conflict resolution. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate the use of conflict resolution techniques through role play; - Design a short and long term conflict resolution plan for a given scenario; - Critically analyse conflict scenarios and discuss diverse approaches.
