DESCRIPTION | The final-year project is the largest single piece of work assigned to students throughout their degree. Its main purpose is that of exposing the student to the scientific process in Computing, from the formulation of a hypothesis and the description of existing work on the subject, to the design and implementation of a solution, to the evaluation of this solution towards addressing the original hypothesis. Study-unit Aims: - Give the student a better understanding of the scientific process in the field of Computing; - Expose the student to the skills necessary for constructing a logical argument when attempting to answer a particular question in the field of computing; - Consolidate the skills gained throughout the degree programme as well as prepare students to undertake and participate in projects upon graduation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Construct a comprehensive literature review; - Demonstrate an understanding of a particular problem, putting it in a particular context of study, articulate the criteria that determine the adequacy of a solution, design and develop a solution and finally, asses the solution with respect to the identified criteria; - Write a well structured report describing the techniques used and the results obtained. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Manage the time allocated to perform a task; - Read technical and advanced material; - Structure one's thought in a logical manner; - Defend the work done in the dissertation.
