DESCRIPTION The dissertation study-unit is the main focus of the degree. It provides the students with the opportunity to investigate a research topic within the research areas covered by the resident academic staff of the Faculty of ICT. The dissertation allows the students to identify a research question, critically assess relevant literature, design and implement software and/or hardware necessary to solve the problem investigated, and write a dissertation according to the Faculty's guidelines. The dissertation will be defended during a viva-voce examination.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to develop the knowledge and skills required to work on a research question in a field of ICT. Moreover, it allows students to develop skills to write a coherent technical dissertation and defend their work in a viva-voce examination.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Construct a comprehensive literature review;
- Demonstrate an understanding of a particular problem, putting it in a particular context of study, articulate the criteria that describe the adequacy of a solution, design and develop a solution and finally, asses the solution with respect to the identified criteria;
- Evaluate the results obtained and compare them with literature;
- Write a well structured dissertation describing the techniques used and the results obtained.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Manage the time allocated to perform a task;
- Read technical and advanced material;
- Structure one's thought in a logical manner;
- Defend the work done in the dissertation.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
