DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to develop the grammar and formal logic skills necessary to function effectively as a student of engineering, architecture or basic sciences at the University of Malta.

Study-unit Aims:

The principal aim of the study-unit is to prepare students so to deal effectively with the reading load required by first year science, engineering or architecture degree students. The study-unit will give students the opportunity to consolidate and clarify grammatical structures needed in completing and organizing lecture notes. It will also give them a grounding in the central aspects of formal logic.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Use a wide range of grammatical structures accurately and appropriately to enhance their writing and ensure that note taking is coherent;
- Understand the notation of symbolic logic;
- Evaluate and complete formulae in predicate logic;
- Construct and truth tables and use them to solve problems;
- Understand notions of ambiguity and tautology;
- Use tableau to evaluate consistency;
- Use logical quantifiers.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate effective use of appropriate grammar in writing;
- Apply scientific reasoning skills to the analysis of arguments and evaluation of evidence;
- Use grammar and logic together to precisely understand questions in English and differentiate between similar statements and ideas;
- Apply formal logic to scientific problems;
- Analyse a set of statements as logical propositions;
- Use logic to evaluate validity of arguments.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Please note that a pass in the Examination component is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded.
