DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides students with a suitable background in Financial Accounting with the aim of preparing them for the more advanced work they are likely to encounter during their undergraduate studies. This study-unit is particularly useful for those students who do not have any prior knowledge of accounting and who intend to eventually join the Bachelor of Commerce or the B.Sc. (Business and Computing) courses and need to satisfy the Special Course Requirements as stipulated in the regulations for these courses. Additionally, this study-unit also introduces students to the accounting requirements of multi-owner organisations, including related advantages and disadvantages - particularly in respect of limited liability companies. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are to: - provide learners with a foundational background and understanding of accounting statements. - provide learners with the necessary analytical skills to interpret a set of financial statements. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - explain the difference between a sole trader and multi-owner business entities; - analyse the advantages and disadvantages of each of these organizational set-ups; - understand the accounting requirements of multi-owner organizations. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - describe the format and contents of a typical set of published accounting statements; - prepare a cash-flow statement for a limited liability company; - compile a basic statement of change in equity.
