DESCRIPTION In this study-unit, learners will engage with some broad social issues from the point of view of economics. These include:
- the role of the government in managing the economy
- the major economic problems and issues such as inflation, unemployment, balance of payments, and economic growth.

It will also introduce learners to macroeconomic concepts such as the circular flow of income, national income measurement, national income equilibrium, determination of national income, deflationary and inflationary gaps, and monetary and fiscal policies.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of the study-unit is for learners to recognise the basic concepts of applied economics and macroeconomics which will enable them to grasp the theories and frameworks that underpin the study of economics at undergraduate level.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- identify basic macroeconomic concepts;
- summarize the main concepts of applied economics;
- infer and interpret different social issues from an economic point of view;
- compare different markets and economies in relation to the major economic problems.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- structure arguments to outline current economic objectives and issues;
- hypothesize on the role of fiscal and monetary policies in managing economies;
- critique international trade and international debt;
- construct arguments based on the behaviour of international economic institutions, such as the European Union, the World Trade Organisation, and the International Monetary Fund;
- outline international economic comparisons.
