DESCRIPTION | IFS0425 will help students wishing to join the foundation programme to engage with a variety of verbal communication genres and text types, in order to improve their vocabulary, comprehension and note-taking. They will also develop their own spoken accuracy and presentation skills. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to introduce a variety of academic text types to students with no-to-little prior experience of engaging with lectures, discussion, and other types of verbal communication in an academic context. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify different types of academic verbal communication from lectures to presentations and discussions; - Demonstrate understanding of the format of an academic presentation; - Understand key technical and signposting language in an academic presentation. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Take notes from lectures and presentations; - Use lecture notes to report information and explain concepts from a presentation; - Discuss and evaluate information gathered from a lecture orally and in writing; - Deliver a simple presentation on an academic topic.
