DESCRIPTION This study-unit will provide an introduction to the basic themes studied in psychology and psychological perspectives as well as present a brief overview of research methods, professions, and fields in psychology. It will explore and explain the biological basis of behaviour, personality, conditioning, and social behaviour. Finally, the study unit will look at how psychology can throw light on the study of companies, business, and the world of finance.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of the study-unit is to offer non-psychology students a basic overview of the principles in psychology which could facilitate the learners' understanding of human behaviour in society in its various aspects, including the biological basis of behaviour, perception, learning, personality, stress, health and illness, and social behaviour. It will serve as a basic study-unit in psychology which will enable students to successfully follow undergraduate study units in psychology or related areas at an undergraduate level.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- recognise the basic concepts and theories in the study of psychology.
- infer knowledge of a person's development in a social context.
- identify individual differences and their influence on interpersonal relations.
- recognise the role that psychology plays in the understanding of employee relations and company hierarchies.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate knowledge and effective use of discipline specific terminology.
- apply the concepts of psychological theories and principles.
- describe and explain in written and spoken communication the different schools of thought in mainstream psychology programmes.
- critique the main theories of psychology.
- demonstrate appropriate knowledge of how psychological issues help us better understand employee relations and company hierarchies.
