DESCRIPTION This study-unit is an introduction to implemented interdisciplinary approaches in Maltese Cultural Heritage contexts. By exploring a range of local case studies which have been investigated over recent years, the students will explore how the Cultural Heritage sector is changing and adapting our understanding to a wider range of opportunities and situations in which collaborative approaches shaped new understandings and produced new narratives. Maltese heritage is rich in material culture frequently considered only through a single perspective hence producing static narratives of what effectively is a very fluid reality. Participants in this study unit will explore how new research collaborations are incorporating the material culture approach. They will address heritage interpretation from interdisciplinary perspectives including Archaeological, Historical, Geographical, Research, Heritage Management and Curatorial.

These studies are intrinsically linked to understanding the complexities of the formation of Cultural Heritage and National identity. The role of the post-colonial narratives on the development of historic and archaeological sites and including artefacts will be explored to recognise how other nations have exploited these interpretations to portray a politicised image of Maltese Heritage and identity. These narratives are now being contested and reviewed with projections helping to better present and manage the Maltese patrimony. During this study-unit, participants will learn to consider multiple historic sources and produce source-based interpretations to portray new insights into Maltese traditions, heritage sites and all that defines the Maltese identity.

Study-Unit Aims:

The scope of this study-unit is to introduce participants to the latest historical research being carried out in the heritage sector which is leading to new interpretations and the creation of a modernised narrative. Different methodological approaches will be also presented to provide the participants an insight in the potentials of interdisciplinary approaches to cultural heritage. The study-unit aims to provide interpretative skills which are the basics for understanding and presenting the development of a relatively young nation with a 7000-year long story.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Use different principles and analytic methods applied in diverse disciplines to create interpretations of Cultural Heritage;
- Predict the relevance and use of the different methodological approaches to enhance the knowledge/understanding and appreciation of cultural values and its interpretations;
- Interpret and produce sound interpretations using information correlations between material culture and other sources;
- Question and rate interpretations of Maltese Cultural Heritage.

2. Skills:
