DESCRIPTION | Students shall be required to submit an individual dissertation of between 15,000 to 20,000 words in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Board. Work on the dissertation shall be undertaken during the third year semester of the course. Each student shall be assigned a supervisor who shall provide guidance and advice on a regular basis during the period of study. A provisional title of the dissertation and a detailed research proposal shall be submitted to the Board for approval by the beginning of the second year semester. Study-Unit Aims: The main aim of this study-unit is to carry out an investigative research project, analyse the data collected and write an academic paper based on the findings. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Prepare a research question or hypothesis; - Write an in-depth literature review of the subject matter and a sound methodological evaluation; - Carry independent archival/library based research and/or, field research through the use of quantitative, qualitative or mixed method research techniques; - If applicable, analyze data using appropriate software tools; - Prepare an academic report. - Discuss and defend the research topic under discussion. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Make use of archival, library and internet-based research skills in order to collect primary data; - Employ analytical and evaluation skills to address specific academic topics; - Write academic papers/essays. The Board shall appoint a supervisor for each student. Students shall be required to report to their supervisors as often as the supervisors deem necessary, but it is suggested that as a minimum, students should meet their supervisors at least once every two months. Supervisors shall submit to the Board of Studies progress reports for each student under their supervision. Such reports may include a recommendation to either (a) extend the period of study in order to enable the student to complete the dissertation; or (b) terminate studies prematurely if the supervisor deems this to be proper in the circumstances, provided that: - The extension of the study period referred to in (a) shall be in accordance with the provisions of the Principal Regulations; and - The Board may not terminate studies prematurely according to (b) until it has first given the student a chance to be heard. |

ADDITIONAL NOTES | **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. | ||||||||||||
