| DESCRIPTION | Few literary works are as challenging, as inspiring, and as profoundly enigmatic as Dante's Divina Commedia. A selection of canti from the Purgatorio will be read with a series of problems in mind: theology and political thought, history and allegory, self and society, platonic love and erotic impulses, reason and faith, transience and eternity, the human and the divine. The interpretative fate of this summa of medieval culture throughout the centuries will be traced, and scholarly questions raised primarily in Italy and the United States will be debated. The traditional close reading, or lectura dantis format, of canto by canto analysis will be combined with a broader approach based on the study of the networks of associations composed of metaphors, images and allusive lexemes, which span the length and breadth of the three cantiche. Each canto will thus be studied individually and also within the vaster framework of Dante's entire oeuvre. Reading List The close readings will be selected from the following canti: - Canto I - Canto II - Canto III - Canto V - Canto VI - Canto XI - Canto XXIII - Canto XXIV - Canto XXVII - Canto XXVIII - Canto XXIX - Canto XXX - Canto XXXI - Canto XXXIII NB: The choice of canti may undergo some modifications during the semester. Students are required to read the selected canti in their entirety. Textbook: DANTE ALIGHIERI Il Purgatorio. Preferably Tommaso Di Salvo’s annotated edition, Bologna, Zanichelli, 2001. |
