DESCRIPTION This study-unit prepares students to effectively train their learners to develop their writing skill in their French as a foreign language course. It tackles the nature of different writing genres, writing according to different communication media, and sociolinguistic aspects which may influence writing styles. It also deals with how writing can be integrated with other language skills in a lesson / a unit, and how teachers can move from guided writing tasks, for instance where writing frames are provided, to gradually bring their learners to write more independently. It also tackles models of how writing tasks can be assigned and prepared for classwork / homework. It deals with effective methods of correcting learners’ written texts and of giving formative feedback.

This study-unit also offers a working knowledge of French classic and contemporary children's literature, stemming from the belief that reading may help students in their writing and in the other language skills. Various works written specifically for children, for their formation and for their entertainment through the centuries, together with the development of this literary genre, will be examined. One will also delve into how French children's literature can be presented to students in today's classroom and used to complement the themes presented in the school's curricula.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to train students to guide their learners of French as a foreign language in developing their writing skill. It intends to make students aware of the importance that this skill is practised very regularly by learners. Ways will be discussed as to how teachers should gradually increase their expectations, by moving away from initial close guidance of learners while they engage in writing, to bring them to more independent production. Another objective of the unit is to prepare students to teach writing according to different genres, purposes and communication media, as well as varying degrees of formality. The theory and practices of formative assessment will be revisited as students train to correct written texts in such a way as to use effective criteria within clear assessment grids, and to give formative feedback.

The study-unit also aims to give students familiarisation with French children's literature through the centuries through a selection of texts, with particular emphasis on present day works, in compliance with the following objectives:
- Understanding the development of a literature for children by providing a cultural-historic background;
- Reading texts actively: recognising key passages; raising questions; appreciating complexity and ambiguity; comprehending the literal and figurative uses of language;
- Learning how to select and adapt the appropriate texts to complement themes covered in secondary school, thus providing students with further reading;
- Examining and explaining themes of initiation, maturation, morality, fantasy, and education in preteen and adolescent poetry and literature.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate methods of developing foreign language learners’ writing skills;
