Study-Unit Description

CODE LHG5002

TITLE Effektive DaF Lehr- und Lernsysteme

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Languages and Humanities Education

DESCRIPTION This study-unit starts by defining the term ‘motivation’. This definition also includes various points and reasons which motivate German as a Foreign Language (GFL) students when choosing GFL as their foreign langauage and which still influence them once they start learning German as a Foreign Language (i.e. intrinsic and extrinsic motives).

The study-unit then moves on to discuss practical ways through which GFL teachers can increase student motivation in the GFL learning contexts they work in. Among others, the study-unit will critically discuss how GFL teachers may maintain student motivation when teaching grammar, when teaching challenging students, when teaching in contexts with mixed abilities and when using group work or pair work in class.

Throughout the study-unit, since the very early stages, students are expected to implement the theories discussed through practical activities.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aims of this particular study-unit are:
- To introduce students to the concept of motivation;
- To implement theories about motivation in practice, through experiences shared and through lesson plans designed;
- To show students how they could themselves be motivated once they keep in mind and apply these theories linked to motivation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the becoming-teachers will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and principles that they require to increase motivation within the GFL learning context;
- Evaluate different ways through which motivation may be diminished within the GFL learning context;
- Examine and preempt what they can include in order to create student oriented learning contexts.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the becoming-teachers will be able to:
- Assess their motivations as GFL teachers and how this affects the GFL learning contexts they will work in;
- Help secondary school GFL students realize that different students may have different motivations when learning GFL;
- Analyze different methods and develop different skills through which they can increase student (and their own i.e. as prospective teachers) motivation.
