DESCRIPTION Theoretical and practical issues in the field of Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics have a significant impact on the teaching and learning of Italian L2. The first part of the study unit will focus on the basic theoretical concepts of Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics. These include the architecture of contemporary Italian, borrowings/calques in Italian, language learner varieties, acquisitional sequences of Italian and the different context-related varieties of the language. Reference will be made to the concepts of neo-standard and italiano d鈥檜so medio. A number of language varieties, which are characteristics of contemporary Italian, will be described and analysed. These will include dialects, jargon, sectorial languages and Italian L2.

Reference will then be made to the sociolinguistic features of Italy both in relation to its demography and to the standardization of the Italian language, within a heterogenous linguistic community characterized by regional varieties and dialects. Linguistic contact between Italy and Malta will also be referred to in order to explain its pedagogical relevance.

The second part of the study-unit will investigate the relevance of these aspects in the Maltese context. While students will be reflecting on linguistically-related topics and on strategies and techniques which are related to language teaching, these will be placed within Italian cultural contexts: these include, for example, typical Italian products and way of life, geographical locations in Italy, historical information, online materials, texts by contemporary authors, films etc. This approach is also present in the Italian coursebooks used in local and foreign schools as well as in recently published school textbooks which base materials on texts selected through the Internet.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to assist the students:
- to become knowledgeable in didactically-related issues of Italian Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics, both from a theoretical and functional point of view.
- to get acquainted with the notions related to language varieties of Italian and their relevance within a classroom context.
- to get acquainted with acquisitional sequences of Italian morphology and syntax.
- to reflect on the changing dynamics of contemporary Italian language and how these changes are related to L2 teaching and learning.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate knowledge of didactically-related issues of Italian Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics by being able to describe them and illustrate them in writing.
- formulate distinctions between forms of Italian varieties and their applications by showing how these may be used for Italian L2 teaching and learning.
- explain the various areas included in Italian Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics by being able to define them, comment on them and relate them to other areas of study.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate that he/she possesses knowledge of contemporary Italian Sociolinguistics and Applied Linguistics by providing practical examples of how aspects of these disciplines are manifest in the present-day use of the language.
- apply and compare developmental sequences of Italian by showing how these are present in written and oral production of learners of Italian L2.
- formulate didactic exercises based on considerations related to the fields of Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics.
