DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will deal with the first laws that were enacted under Malta's first self-government constitution of 1921. Legislation governing the budgetary system, the treasury, pensions and social security, housing, welfare, agriculture, education, trade unionism, parliament, the public administration, as well as national security and immigration will be delved into. Study-unit Aims: As this study-unit cuts across all other departments of the law studied in the LLB Honours undergraduate programme of studies, it aims to enable the student to complement thematically the main subjects of law studies in this course, such as civil law, criminal law,other branches of public law that deal with themes that are not covered under the main subjects of law taught in this programme of studies. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) write a detailed assignment on the laws enacted during the first self-government of Malta; (b) analyse, evaluate, study, and interpret the laws enacted by a Maltese self-government and trace how they have evolved since then; and (c) be able to give advice on the provisions of the laws enacted during the first self-government period. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) familiarise themselves with laws enacted during the first period of self-government; (b) appraise, evaluate and research upon laws enacted during the first self-government; and (c) apply the case law of the Maltese courts that has interpreted these laws to particular cases.
