DESCRIPTION This study-unit will deal with leading legal materials held in archives and depositories primarily the National Archives, and including also the Notarial Archives, the Archives of the Chamber of Commerce, the Archives of the House of Representatives, the Archives of the Order of St John within the National Library, the Archives of the Chamber of Advocates, and others. From the sources contained in this Archives and Depositaries a lot of light can be shed on the Maltese legal system as it has evolved over time and as how it has developed to date.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to make students aware of primary sources of legal information that they ought to research throughout their academic studies at the Faculty of Laws of the University of Malta. Although this is a stand alone study-unit, its aim is to assist students who study and branch off the law to become more acquainted with primary legal materials, including case law, that is housed in archives and depositaries that has not yet been unpacked. The study-unit thus takes the student to the source from where the law has originated and how it have developed making research more authentic, precise, and one that uncovers how Maltese legal principles have evolved over time

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) write a detailed assignment on legal documentation held in archives and depositaries in Malta;
(b) analyse, evaluate, study, and interpret the the National Archives Act; and
(c) through primary sources unearthed from research carried out at an archive, be able to give advice on legal development of a particular law that has been researched in an archive depository.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) familiarise themselves with legal archives and depositaries in Malta;
(b) appraise, evaluate and research in a legal archive and depository primary sources of the law; and
(c) apply unearthed materials from archives and depository to particular cases.
