DESCRIPTION Reference will be made to the constitutional provisions and ad hoc ordinary legislative measures which were mended to regulate and enhance the teaching, advancement and spread of Maltese and English in Malta contemporaneously and coherently. The forces of influence, political and intellectual, that contributed to the formation of the legal set up as it is today will also be studied.

Study-unit Aims:

- This study-unit indicates the role of legislation in spreading the teaching and learning of Maltese and English languages in Malta in line with the constitutional developments from the time of the introduction of self-government in Malta in 1921;
- It is particularly meant to sensitize the students following this study-unit towards the local language through the contribution of several groups of intellectuals and professional including advocates and lawyers over the years until the two languages were recognized officially at the fundamental law level in 1964.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) Analyze, study, evaluate and interpret the constitutional and legal provisions relating to the Maltese and English languages;
(b) Implement and give advice on the historic-legal evolution and establishment of the Maltese language and its legal recognition and use over time.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) Familiarize themselves with the constitutional and legal provision in a historical context in relation to the recognition, establishment, entrenchment and, particularly, the enforcement of Maltese and English as the official languages of Malta;
(b) Appraise the law, whether through coercion or direction, regulating the legal evolution over time of the Maltese and English language.
