| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will help students to reflect on the didactic treatment of the sociocultural component in the Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) classroom over the years, establishing the most suitable criteria and techniques for its presentation and treatment in the SFL curriculum. With this aim in mind we will analyse a selection of didactic sequences, activities and materials found in a number of textbooks (including those found in schools), as well as elaborate our own activities and resources with the help of authentic audiovisual and printed materials, including literary texts. Furthermore, becoming-teachers of Spanish will be familiarised with inclusive techniques that respond to today's multicultural scenario in local schools, emphasising the importance of intercultural activities which celebrate the richness and acceptance of different world cultures. Study-Unit Aims: - To help students explore the relationship between language and culture. - To help students reflect on the treatment of the sociocultural component in the SFL classroom over the years. - To help students identify Hispanic sociocultural stereotypes and clichés present in textbooks and other teaching materials for the SFL classroom. - To help students design and create a number of resources for the inclusion of the sociocultural component in the SFL classroom. - To help students identify effective classroom techniques and activities for the development of learners' intercultural competencies. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - determine the value of the sociocultural component in the SFL classroom from a communicative perspective. - name those Hispanic sociocultural stereotypes and clichés that might mislead the foreign student. - analyse a number of resources used for the teaching of SFL and comment, by giving concrete examples, on the treatment of the sociocultural component in them. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - use an authentic audiovisual material or printed text to design an activity that focuses on the richness of a sociocultural component and its importance for the nurturing of learners' communicative competence. - elaborate a didactic sequence that treats sociocultural aspects soundly by integrating them with other components of the language. - elaborate a didactic sequence which seeks to develop learners' intercultural competencies.
