| DESCRIPTION | The degree dissertation should clearly demonstrate the student's research skills in the area acquired during the taught parts of the course. The theme chosen will have to reflect the currency of research at the time of the study and also provide innovative ideas and a contribution to knowledge. It should clearly prove the student's ability at utilizing correct research processes, original reflection and a resulting contribution of new knowledge in the area of librarianship, records management or archives studies. Study-unit Aims: - To apply and articulate research methodologies for an extensive research project which a dissertation at master's level requires; - To explore a specific topic in depth; - To carry out original research in an area which is still lacking in research attention. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand the theory and practicalities of research, including setting and achieving realistic goals, planning, working with other colleagues familiar with the research area, presentation skills and meeting institutional requirements and expectations of good practice; - Apply the technique for advancing one's personal and collective knowledge in a given area: setting up of a reading programme, literature review, techniques in librarianship, information management, records and archives management, interviewing, observation and gathering of evidence; - Develop a critical framework in which to review research and research methods adopted (quantitative/qualitative), taking account the nature of research practice. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Conduct original research using primary source material; - Consistently use internationally accepted standards of style in carrying out and presenting original research. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Texts depend on the subject-matter of the dissertation chosen by the student and approved at departmental and faculty level. |
