DESCRIPTION | The study-unit offers a general overview on the millenarian history of the Roman Catholic Church to allow students to understand the legal framework, functioning, and structure of the ecclesiastical central and peripheral offices as archival creators. The unit focuses on the development of the Church administration through the centuries and its rich holding institutions at a universal and local level. The role and history of the Apostolic Chancery and Vatican Archives will be also discussed to allow a deeper understanding of these aspects through a study of the primary sources which reflect the inner workings of the curial, diplomatic and pastoral aspects of this institution. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to equip students with a solid understanding of the key-points and developments of the administrative history and the curial, diplomatic and parish apparatus of the Catholic Church. It also aims to let students appreciate the documentary heritage of the universal and local Church. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Outline the administrative history of the Catholic Church and its offices; - Explain the context and development of such structure and their function; - Demonstrate knowledge of the different research tools available for Church archives in Malta and abroad and their respective effectiveness and suitability; - Compare the application of archival theory in an ecclesiastical and a civil environment; - Compare archival practices as they are applied in ecclesiastical archives both locally and abroad. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Show a grasp of the interpretative tools necessary for the studying of institutional history; - Apply interpretative and multidisciplinary skills necessary for studying the documentary heritage; - Write the administrative history of the different archival creators involved in the production of records; - Reconstruct the wider archival context; - Construct strategic documents outlining policies for the management of ecclesiastical archives.
