DESCRIPTION This unit covers the theoretical basis of cataloguing highlighting the main standards and how authority files feature in such a process. It also gives hands-on training to students in classification. Contrary to purely theoretical units, this unit is based on the application of librarianship systems in real life scenarios and students will be exposed to real life library settings and involved in applying cataloguing standards and practices.

Study-unit Aims:

The main objectives of this study unit are the following:
- allow students to familiarise themselves with the main cataloguing standards;
- highlight the importance of authority records and provide students with the skills necessary to create such records;
- introduce students to the main library classification systems and their structures.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate the importance of cataloguing and the application of the right standards;
- Explain the philosophy and use of authority control;
- Compare and explain the structure of library classification systems and schemas;
- Outline the main deciding factors in decision making when selecting and adapting a classification or cataloguing system in a library environment.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Carry out standard cataloguing processes;
- Use and create authority records;
- Link authority records to parallel finding aids systems;
- Restructure legacy finding aids in order to enhance with the right standards;
- Use library managements systems to catalogue, maintain authority files and assign notation using a library classification.
