DESCRIPTION | ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ needs are central to information services. Determining and discovering what information is required to meet information needs are the main concerns of all information-seekers. Assisting information-seekers fulfill these information needs is one of the major responsibilities and tasks of information professionals. This assistance is traditionally and broadly referred to as reference services. Introducing students to the fundamentals of information services, this study-unit concentrates on the core theoretical and practical issues related to reference services. It provides the theoretical foundations and the practical tools necessary to identify, understand, and manage reference services particularly within information-intensive settings such as libraries. Approaching in-person, virtual/remote, and hybrid reference services and practices, this study-unit will help students: identify information needs and their associated information and reference services; deliver information and reference services, including addressing information queries and conducting research; and evaluate different kinds of information and reference services. Topics covered will include: • ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ needs and information-seeking behaviours; • Types of reference services including in-person, virtual/remote, and hybrid; • Standards of reference services; • Strategies of/for reference services; • Programs of reference services; • Delivering reference services; • Assessing and evaluating reference services; • Ethical issues of reference services; • Current and emerging trends in reference services. Study-unit Aims: - The study-unit will establish the theoretical and practical foundations for the design, implementation, and provision of information and reference services; - By providing a detailed overview of the diverse types of information and reference services, and associated information needs and related behaviours, the study-unit will provide a strong basis upon which to apply and expand knowledge about information and reference services. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate an informed understanding of the main theories and practices of information and reference services; - Develop an understanding for the rationales underpinning diverse information and reference services; - Identify information needs and leverage relevant reference services to meet them; - Identify diverse kinds of information sources available and appropriate that can be deployed to meet information needs; - Demonstrate critical analytical skills in assessing and evaluating diverse types of reference services, including standards, strategies, programs, and delivery methods and practices. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply knowledge of information and reference services within information-intensive settings and beyond; - Identify, compare, assess, and evaluate different types of information and reference services; - Develop and manage information and reference services, including standards, strategies, programs, and delivery methods; - Ability to provide information and reference services to diverse information needs; - Apply ethical approaches and care in creating, delivering, and managing information and reference services; - Enhance communication skills for conducting and delivering information and reference services.
