DESCRIPTION During this practicum, students will have opportunities to plan for and set-up a learning environment which is motivating and attractive for very young children aged 3 - 5 years. Prior to the four-week placement they will be responsible to undertake preparations for the specific group of children they would have been assigned. This will include visiting the early years' settings of their practicum and holding tutorials with their respective mentors/examiners.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of the study-unit is to provide students the possibility to apply the theories and pedagogies they have learnt in an ECE setting. The study unit will aim to allow students demonstrate their ability to prepare and plan activities that are based on the children's interest and show their professional attitude, development and commitment. It also aims to foster student's ability to document the children's interest and to be reflective in their practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Have insights into how young children learn and make sense of the world around them;
• Be knowledgeable in identifying activities which are appropriate for the needs of the children in a group;
• Critically reflect upon and evaluate activities with a view to strengthening the learning environment;
• Analyse the importance of the home, children’s background and parents’ contribution to young children’s development.

2. Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Show skills in managing a group of very young learners;
• Suitably plan, prepare and deliver activities which promote learning amongst young learners;
• Show the ability to listen children and plan activities that are based on their interests;
• Prepare resources and materials;
• Work effectively with other adults;
• Liaise with and involve parents in their children’s learning and development;
• Reflect on their practice and identify ways to improve.

Main Texts:

This is a practical study-unit and hence, no texts are required. However, in their reflections, students will be expected to support their arguments by referring to various literature introduced in other study-units.
