DESCRIPTION | During this practicum, students will have opportunities to plan for and set-up a learning environment which is motivating and attractive for very young children aged 3 - 5 years. Prior to the six-weeks placement practice they will be responsible to undertake preparations for the specific group of children they would have been assigned. This will include visiting the early years' settings of their practicum and holding tutorials with their respective mentors/examiners. It is also anticipated that students draw on their experiences and feedback given to them in the first practical component (LLI2001). Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to help students apply the theoretical knowledge during their field placement. In particular it will enable them to document children’s interests and requirements and to respond to their needs by planning and delivering age-appropriate activities that promote education and learning. The study-unit aims to enable students implement an emergent curriculum approach in a Kindergarten setting. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply knowledge of child development to choice of activities & their delivery; - Demonstrate an understanding of the teaching/learning processes; - Begin to develop a repertoire of teaching skills; - Critically reflect upon and evaluate activities with a view to strengthening the learning environment; - Analyse the importance of the home, children’s background and parents’ contribution to young children’s development. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Plan, prepare and deliver activities which are appropriate for the age group; - Plan, prepare and use a variety of materials effectively; - Develop an environment that meets children's interest, curiosity, and their need for sensory and experiential activities; - Develop an environment that allows for individual space, a sense of ownership and collaboration; - Manage a group of young children effectively; - Work closely with other adults in a professional manner; - Establish a positive rapport with the children and their parents; - Assess children and identify the next step to help them grow. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Main Texts: This is a practical study-unit and hence, no texts are required. However, in their reflections, students will be expected to support their arguments by referring to various literature introduced in other study-units. |
