DESCRIPTION Using a case-based approach, this unit will address fundamental themes that characterise effective use of the Internet. It will also promote preventive and corrective measures in relation to problematic use of the Internet. Typical situations encountered in the classroom involving both responsible and problematic use of the Internet will be explored to understand the key issues involved, to provide guiding principles and identify underlying value systems. The unit will guide participants in developing a range of competencies needed to guide students and teachers in using the Internet in a secure and responsible way.

Study-Unit Aims:

This unit will enable participants to:
- Explore the various forms of digital access;
- Engage with the management of personal finance on-line, e-commerce and related net-compulsions;
- Evaluate different digital communication methods and their appropriate use;
- Understand netiquette in terms of standards of conduct and procedure in on-line environments;
- Discuss digital rights and responsibilities;
- Expose themselves to health, well-being and problematic behaviour related to the Internet;
- Understand security and protection in on-line environments;
- Develop strategies how to promote DCE themes and practices in their schools.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify solutions for students lacking access to technology or the internet;
- Identify solutions regarding access to technology and the internet for students with special needs;
- Create awareness of net compulsions with regard to online gambling and use of online auction sites, such as eBay;
- Reflect about how others see the way one uses technology;
- Analyse legal and ethical issues related to on-line learning and use of on-line resources;
- Discuss different aspects of digital health and well-being;
- Analyse different categories of internet addictions;
- Discuss different aspects of cybersex (especially pornography and adult websites) and its negative effect on one’s conceptions and attitude to real-life intimate relationships;
- Identify different models and strategies that could be used in class (and at home) to manage on-line security;
- Explore the different aspects of cyberbullying and measures to control it;
- Discuss the key role of the family in developing secure and responsible use of the Internet;
- Identify key regulations and policies that schools need to have in place.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Use the internet to promote different modes of learning;
- Manage personal digital footprint;
- Identify fake profiles;
- Identify non-secure sites;
- Buy or sell on-line in a secure way;
- Use various digital tools and apps to communicate in different ways according to need;
- Use metacognitive strategies to control internet surfing compulsion;
- Evaluate fake news;
- Practice netiquette when on-line;
- Manage legal and ethical issues related to the proprietary and use of on-line content;
- Manage cyber relationships controlling for addiction to social networking, chat rooms, and messaging;
- Manage gaming activity (on-line and off-line);
- Take the correct precautions and use the right tools that guarantee on-line safety;
- Develop school policies to promote DCE;
- Develop a CPD strategy for school staff in DCE.
