DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is intended for those who wish to undertake the Leadership Route. The intent behind this study-unit is to provide course participants the opportunity to engage with a number of practitioners that have direct experience with various aspects that are central to school life namely governance, the management of change, middle management, education and the law, classification and time-tabling. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims: - To explore issues central to school improvement; - To investigate and question issues that are central to school life; - To practice the skills of timetabling; - To critique the area of governance within the international and local scene. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse and critique the principles behind shared governance; - Examine current practices related to middle management; - Discuss and explain principles related to policies related to governance and the education act; - Identify the principles central to the management of change from an international and local perspective. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate how particular policies and practices are applied at the school/department level; - Review existing practices in line with the discussions and readings related to the themes discussed during this study-unit; - Design a system of classification for school purposes; - Assess time-tabling procedures existing within a school; - Design a time-table for a primary or secondary school.
