DESCRIPTION Those taking leadership roles need to develop skills in research related to everyday practice. In this study unit, students will learn about design, implementation and evaluation of a research project linked to a leadership role (for example: planning the school development day or a professional development project for LSAs, teachers or the SMT). In this project, students need to demonstrate their skills in planning, undertaking research and in report writing. There will be a focus on using the skills in undertaking Case studies, Action research, Interviews and observational studies in particular that have been studied during the study-unit entitled: Research Methods & Evaluation. In writing up the report, participants must provide details of every step taken from identifying the problem or issue under study and determining the goals, to outlining the outcomes of the research, and in reporting and disseminating the results.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- Equip future educational leaders with the necessary skills needed to lead and manage a community;
- Offer experiential learning by working on a small project within their place of work;
- Assist students with applying what is learnt in class to the real world situations;
- Develop educational leaders who are better equipped to deal with the challenges faced within their institution;
- Enable students to design, implement and assess projects;
- Ensure that students do not only learn from personal experience but also from their colleagues and Faculty academic staff.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify a research area for investigation and explain its importance;
- Explain the plan of action and the methodology used in the study;
- Demonstrate knowledge of various qualitative research methodologies;
- Outline the challenges encountered and the benefits of conducting such a study;
- Discuss the researcher role and its influence on the study being carried out;
- Mention ethical considerations related to the particular study conducted;
- Describe the implications that results from the study may have on future practices.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Practise skills related to design, research, problem-solving, organization, reflective practice and communication;
- Choose an appropriate methodology to address the problem identified for research;
- Apply the research methodologies learnt in real life situations;
- Explore possibilities for undertaking the study, working with colleagues and disseminating the results;
- Design actions that incorporates research plans;
- Review outcomes from the research study;
- Envisage possible alterations providing reasons for the proposed changes.
