| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will build on the themes from the first year linguistics unit, Introducing Sign Linguistics, with a more detailed exploration of the linguistic features of LSM and other signed languages. The unit will cover syntax, morphology, semantics, and phonetics/phonology, including non-manual features and discussion of the productive and frozen lexicon. Students will be guided to explore different areas of linguistics and to use appropriate terminology to describe how these relate to features of sign linguistics. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit will aim to build on previous linguistics study units and further develop metalinguistic knowledge to evaluate and explain linguistic details of LSM and other signed languages, in particular: - Syntax, morphology, semantics, phonetics/phonology; - The principles of the productive and frozen lexicon, including principles of new sign formation; - Borrowing and loan translation from signed and spoken languages; - Different types of sentence formation in LSM. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe sign formation from the productive and frozen lexicon of LSM; - Explain in detail, and with critical comment, the features of a visual grammar, with examples; - Apply grammatical theory to non-manual features of LSM. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Evaluate productive features of sign language morphosyntax; - Identify and analyse salient non-manual features in LSM and other signed languages.
