DESCRIPTION This study-unit will explore what it means to acquire an L1 and how acquiring a first language differs from learning it as an L2 in community and further/higher education contexts. The discussion will centre around the implications of this for signed languages. These themes will then be explored and related to different ways of preparing materials for transmissions of knowledge about signed languages (specifically LSM).

Study-unit Aims:

- To help students understand the difference between L1 and L2 learners.
- To critically evaluate the context of teaching and learning.
- To deliver prepared material which reflects this context.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate awareness of the differences between language learning in an L2 vs. L1 context;
- Describe and evaluate a range of experiences for Deaf and Hearing children in acquiring their first language and second language.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate understanding of the difference between acquiring a first language and learning a second language;
- Adapt strategies and methods for language learners on the basis of context;
- Make explanations about linguistic concepts accessible to sign language learners.
