DESCRIPTION | Follows from: Masters’ elective credits in Mathematics Reading List: As suggested by Dissertation Supervisor/Advisor The candidate submits a dissertation on the topics chosen for the M.Sc. course. The dissertation is assessed by the External examiner (who is usually non-visiting), and by the members of the panel of supervision. A viva-voce examination is also held, where the candidate answers questions about his/her dissertation. Aims The main aim of the dissertation is for students to conduct an independent investigation in a particular branch of Mathematics under the supervision of their tutors. They will be guided during tutorials and seminars to investigate in greater depth an area of particular interest, to critically evaluate theoretical perspectives in their chosen area and to develop a critical understanding of the material encountered in the literature. Students will practice and develop skills in evaluating and comparing existing theories, and/or undertaking theoretical or practical work of an advanced or an original nature. They will be required to write their findings in the form of a dissertation that shall be in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Faculty. Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to: - Identify a research problem which they wish to explore - Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical perspectives in their chosen area of study - Demonstrate a critical understanding of the methods used in research - Analyse and evaluate information that is relevant to the research problem - Report and discuss the results of their research in a clear, structured and concise form - Evaluate the strengths and limitations of their research and propose possible further studies |

ADDITIONAL NOTES | **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. | ||||||||||||
