DESCRIPTION Today’s business world is continuously changing and presenting complex challenges to organisations operating within it. Those managing such organisations face these challenges and are expected to find solutions to address them. This study-unit presents a number of management topics with which organisations and managers need to contend and resolve if they want to continue operating successfully in this ever changing and challenging environment. This study-unit aims to show students how theory can be applied to real life business challenges and introduces a tool box of interventions through which students learn how to analyse a problem, identify potential solutions, select different possible interventions and understand how to apply different interventions to the challenges presented. This study-unit will include the following topics:

- Introduction to applied management and evidence-based management;
- The role of management in organisations;
- The evolving organisation: structures, processes and change;
- Strategy and its application to business;
- The science behind organisational behaviour;
- The use of technology in managing organisations;
- Management and Artificial Intelligence;
- Governance and ethics in business organisations;
- The future of work and changing managerial paradigms;
- Using data in business decision making;
- Sustainability and business.

At the end of the study-unit students will have a stronger understanding of the theory behind management practice and a deeper appreciation of some of the main trends affecting management and organisations today. It will also help students continue to develop critical and analytical thinking skills together with other personal skills required in management practice.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to help students learn how to analyse business challenges and design interventions which combine the theoretical knowledge gained through the course with the principles and logic of applied and evidence-based management. Through this study-unit students learn to develop further their theoretical knowledge and apply it to develop and assess solutions applicable to business challenges, assess risks and benefits of designing and applying solutions to business challenges and determine how to best apply theoretical principles to working solutions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the principles of management in business organisations;
- Describe and evaluate current practices in the management of business organisations;
- Assess and interpret how to assess management and business challenges;
- Develop and critically evaluate solutions to address business challenges;
- Apply theoretical models to address business challenges;
- Compare and reconcile the theoretical assumptions of management models with the complexities of applied business situations.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyse business problemsand propose effective, actionable solutions;
- Select and apply appropriate tools and solution to address business challenges;
- Combine multiple interventions and assess how they within a business context;
- Evaluate the applicability and suitability of proposed solutions in specific organisational settings;
- Construct theoretical models which are applicable to real world business solutions;
- Negotiate the implementation and adoption of solutions proposed to address business challenges.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Pre-requisite Study-unit: Although no pre-requisite study-units are required the course does assume that students have a good basic understanding of the main topics in management such as marketing, strategy, human resources and statistics.
