DESCRIPTION | In this unit, students are, first, orientated to the context scenario of managing projects. In particular, they are given the analytical skills to define projects and the necessary knowhow to lead project management. Students are exposed to the specific culture of managing projects within social care institutions; thus enhancing their potential to manage project success and limit pitfalls, risks and failures. In providing this scenario, the unit presents a number of project management models, including PRINCE 2 methodology. Secondly, the study-unit focuses students’ attention on delivering the primary objectives of project management by formulating the project scope and mapping out the task-breakdown. This includes project organization, embracing governance and organizational design. The study-unit is targeted to equip students with the right skills to launch projects, draw milestone planning, chart individual and collective responsibilities, as well as plan resource allocation and estimation. Study-Unit Aims: The study-units aims to introduce students to a structured approach in managing projects. It seeks to provide students with a portfolio of fundamental skills that are required to plan, organise, implement, monitor, control and evaluate multi-resource and multi-objective complex projects. Overall, this unit is specifically intended to help students, who aspire for or are already engaged as professional officers within social care institutions, to take charge and lead managerial projects. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - apply project management skills across difference projects, irrespective whether technical or organisational; - comprehend project management as a necessary element of management tool kit, rather than simply learning a computer programme; - understand the theoretical instructions of practical methods that have been consistently tried and proved successful. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to apply tools and techniques for the preparation and/or presentation of: - project proposals; - milestone plans; - sub-milestone plans; - activity plans; - responsibility charts for implementing project standard procedures and milestones and activities; - forecast estimate cost and time, discern cost and time status versus progress of work during project implementation phase; - turnaround documents for control purpose; - project end reviews/audits.
