DESCRIPTION This study unit introduces the student to the anatomy and physiology of the female and the male reproductive system.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the study unit, the student will have developed:

- A sound knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of reproduction;
- Knowledge of conception and contraception;
- An understanding of infertility;
- A sound knowledge of the development of the fetus, placenta and membranes.

Content:

- The external genital organs;
- The vagina;
- The cervix;
- The uterus;
- The menstrual cycle;
- The fallopian tubes and ovaries;
- The female pelvis;
- The pelvic floor;
- The urinary system;
- The male reproduction system;
- Conception, contraception, infertility;
- Early development of the placenta and chorion;
- The placenta at term;
- Development of the fetus, amniotic membrane and amniotic fluid;
- The female breasts;
- The fetal skull.
