DESCRIPTION In this study-unit the student will discuss midwifery care of the woman during a ‘normal’ pregnancy, labour and childbirth.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the study unit the student will:
- Understand that childbearing is a potentially normal period in life to maintain the students’ regard for childbearing as a potentially normal period in life;
- Develop an awareness of the physical, psychological and social needs of mother and baby during pregnancy, labour and the puerperium;
- Develop the necessary skills and attitudes required to the care of mother and baby during pregnancy, labour and the puerperium;
- Become aware of the potential deviations from normal in mother and baby during pregnancy, labour and the puerperium;
- Become aware of the role and responsibilities of the midwife with regard to pregnancy, labour and the puerperium;
- Gain an understanding of the types of analgesia and anaesthesia currently used in childbirth;
- Gain an understanding of nutritional and dietetics with special reference to the woman, newborn and young babies determine nutritional requirements of the mother and neonates and small infant.

Contents:

- Monitoring of the mother and baby including antenatal care both booking and follow up visits, tests and investigations done during this period;
- Management of normal labour;
- Pain relief and alternatives available;
- Monitoring of neonatal conditions including tests and investigations;
- Management of care to the mother and baby during the post partum period and planning for the future;
- Signs of possible deviation from the normal process and reasons for adjustment of care and management;
- The mechanism of normal birth;
- Factors enhancing favourable progress during labour;
- The role of the father in pregnancy, labour and the puerperium;
- The interaction of the new baby within the family;
- Nutrition and dietetics of the mother, newborn and small infant;
- Establishment of feeding the newborn infant.
