DESCRIPTION This practical study-unit simulates scenarios so that students will become familiar with what happens on a clinical ward. Emphasis is given to an antenatal clinic setting and students will be given the opportunity to observe and practice, assessing women who attend for their booking visit.

Moreover, this study-unit is designed to assist students to develop the knowledge and skills required in the provision of adult basic life support and the use of the automated external defibrillator.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims are to:
- Expose the student to a simulated maternity setting;
- Allow students to experience a maternity setting with regards to normal childbearing;
- Allow students to gain an insight into the importance of documentation with regards to midwifery practice;
- Allow students to gain experience under supervision on basic midwifery skills;
- Provide students with the skills needed to perform adult basic life support and safely use the automated external defibrillator.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand the meaning of the booking visit;
- Start to realize what is normal in childbearing;
- Realise the importance of documentation;
- Learn about the basic midwifery skills;
- Understand the principles underlying cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
- Gain knowledge on the importance of early defibrillation in cases of cardiac arrest.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Perform a booking visit for a pregnant woman;
- Carry out basic midwifery skills;
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation as a lone rescuer, in a simulated incident on an appropriate resuscitation manikin, according to the latest ERC guidelines;
- Operate the automated external defibrillator safely and efficiently in line with current ERC guidelines.
