DESCRIPTION This study-unit is targeted to first year midwifery students. This study-unit will introduce basic midwifery skills through the use of lectures, demonstrations of skills and opportunity of hands on practice in the clinical laboratory. This study-unit includes the theory and practice of the following topics: Hand washing, monitoring of temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure, bandaging, monitoring of blood glucose, Urinalysis, bed bathing and bed making.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are:

- To introduce students to the basic knowledge of the activities of daily living;
- To acquaint students in promoting the client's self care;
- To familiarise the students with the skills involved in Universal Precautions;
- To introduce basic knowledge of midwifery skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the indications of why the midwifery skills mentioned above are related to pregnancy, labour and the postnatal periods, including the neonate where applicable;
- Analyze the different mechanisms of the various midwifery skills used, demonstrating the nature of the information sought and rationale for its use;
- Explain the indications for using the necessary apparatus/equipment and understand how they may be used/applied;
- Understand how to document and interpret findings;
- Describe the criteria used to identify normal and pathological outcomes;
- Explain the midwife's role and responsibilities in relation to each of these aspects of care.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate performance of basic midwifery clinical skills under supervision;
- Demonstrate good hand washing techniques using soap and water or alcohol hand rubs depending upon the procedure;
- Identify the need to inform the mother about the procedure to be undertaken on self or on her baby;
- Complete the procedures carefully, safeguarding the dignity and privacy of clients applying infection control guidelines and protocols;
- Practice an individualised approach to care, encouraging independence and mobility when possible;
- Demonstrates good communication skills: introduces self, explain procedure to client and ensures that the client is understanding;
- Informs client about findings;
- Completes proper documentation.
