DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is targeted to first year midwifery students, as clients’ safety and the prevention of healthcare associated infections are recognised as vital components of modern care. This study-unit will provide an overview of the fundamental principles of clients’ safety and their application in the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide midwifery students with essential knowledge and skills on the fundamental principles on the mother’s and baby’s safety and their application in the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections, whilst recognising the research-based evidence for infection prevention and control practice in institutional and community/primary care settings. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate the ability to initiate, obtain, evaluate and apply microbiological knowledge in relation to infection control problems in the clinical arena; - Summarise the various prevalent types of multi drug resistant organisms locally, the elements required for the transmission and subsequent infection process, to include direct and indirect contact, knowledge of the chain of infection and the need for vigilance and safe practice at all times; and - Appreciate the importance of infection prevention and control in providing a safe environment for mothers and babies, staff and visitors. - Have a better understanding of the basic principles of infection control and be able to apply standard precautions in relation to infection control. - Understand their role in the prevention of the transmission of multi drug resistant organisms (MDRO). 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply patient safety and infection prevention principles; - Perform hand hygiene following the recommended technique and using the appropriate product; - Choose, put on and remove the correct personal protective equipment required for the task to be performed; - Apply standard precautions when caring for mothers and babies; - Understand the additional precautions required for patients on contact, droplet, airborne and protective precautions; - Recognise current challenges in the development of antibiotic resistance and apply correct and safe antibiotic use to avoid antibiotic resistance; - Initiate, manage and critically evaluate research-based infection prevention and control practice, in line with local policies/guidelines, whilst also acting as a role model to colleagues; - Understand and apply cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation to include cleaning standards, procedures and frequencies while paying special attention to decontamination of equipment, including patient care equipment; and - Identify the main blood borne viruses which pose a threat and the methods that prevent the spread of infections.
