DESCRIPTION This study-unit is targeted to second year students. It is designed to allow students to develop the knowledge and skills required in the provision of asepsis, including equipment used, non-touch technique and establishing a sterile field. This is covered through the use of lectures, demonstrations of skills and opportunity of hands on practice in the clinical laboratory.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to:

- Assist students in the understanding of the measures taken to promote asepsis;
- Familiarise students with the skills needed to perform invasive procedures under aseptic technique.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Familiarise oneself with the universal precautions of infection control;
- Discuss the principles of asepsis;
- Familiarise oneself with the equipment used and procedures followed to support aseptic measures;
- Learn how to use the correct technique and how to establish a sterile field;
- Discuss the role and responsibilities of the midwife when undertaking an aseptic procedure.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply the principles of asepsis, to prevent the incidence of hospital acquired infections;
- Perform invasive procedures such as urinary catheterisation and/or change of dressing using aseptic techniques under simulated conditions.
