DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to develop the students' knowledge of various situations and conditions where the newborn requires neonatal intensive care. It provides the theoretical aspects of caring for sick and/or preterm infants and deals with the pathophysiology and management of care for various disorders which necessitate the admission of a newborn to an intensive care unit. It also includes the psychological and social aspects of care particularly for the parents whose newborn requires such intensive care shortly after birth. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to: - Develop the students' knowledge of the pathophysiology for various conditions which can affect both term and preterm babies; - Develop the students' understanding of the management of care required when dealing with specific conditions / illnesses in babies in the first year life; - Develop the students' awareness of caring for a preterm infant and become familiar with complications related to prematurity; - Develop the students' awareness of the psychological and social needs of parents having a sick baby. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of selected conditions / situations which necessitate the admission of a newborn into intensive care; - Demonstrate an awareness of the management of care specific to selected conditions / situation in sick newborns; - Demonstrate an understanding of illnesses which are common in the first year of the child’s life; and - Demonstrate an understanding of physical, psychological and social needs of parents having a sick newborn. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the management of care for various conditions / situations in newborns; - Articulate a holistic approach to the care provided for sick babies and their parents; - Demonstrate a sensitive approach and attitude to the care provided in neonatal units.
