DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to inform the students' knowledge of the physiological changes which occur in the healthy term newborn at birth and the early care provided by the midwife in first few days after birth.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- Develop the students' knowledge of the newborn's adaptation to extrauterine life;
- Develop the students' awareness of normal general characteristics of a baby born at term;
- Identify the midwife's role in providing immediate care to the newborn at birth and subsequently daily care in the postnatal setting;
- Recognise the midwife's role in supporting the new mother and her partner in feeding and caring for their baby in the first year of the child’s life.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate an understanding of the physiological changes occurring in the newborn at birth;
- Demonstrate an awareness of the midwife's role in supporting the newborn to make a smooth transition to extra-uterine life;
- Demonstrate appropriate knowledge in neonatal care provided by the midwife in the healthy term baby;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the developmental milestones throughout the first year of the child’s life.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the observations made by the midwife when caring for a healthy term baby;
- Identify the midwife's role in promoting confidence and competence in the parents by supporting them as they learn how to care for their baby.
